Electricity shut off? Paying water charges late?

I have past due electricity/water invoices. How does the collection process proceed? What can the consequences be?

The collection of unpaid electricity and water invoices differs a bit from the usual (learn more about the collection process in the section titled Did you receive mail?) collection process, as if you do not immediately initiate contact and explain your situation by the due date of the first demand for payment letter, the water or electricity or service may be shut off.

Therefore, contact the collection agency as soon as possible and agree on paying it off. Prior to the electricity or water being shut off, you will receive a termination of service notice. Note, that after that time no additional time can be agreed on for making the payment.

Once the service has been interrupted, the balance of the unpaid invoices proceeds to court, where a debt payment obligation ruling is sought from the district court. The district court ruling will result in a default payment entry in your credit report, which makes creating a new electricity service contract difficult, for example.

Can I make a payment plan?

Yes, you can agree on paying off your electricity or water service invoice over a few instalments, as long as you contact the collection agency's customer service department without delay. Do not unnecessarily prolong the issue, as once you receive the termination of service notice, establishing a payment plan is no longer possible.

If you have received a letter from Lindorff, please contact our customer service department.

When can the electricity/water service be shut off?

Depending on the case, the electricity can be shut off 5 weeks, 3 months, or 4 months after the original invoice due date. Read the terms of your electricity service contract for more details.

Depending on the case, the water service can be shut off 5 weeks or 3 months after the original invoice due date. Read the general terms of delivery of your water department for more details.

Prior to the electricity or water service being shut off, you will receive a termination warning, after which you have two weeks to make the payments. Note that at this point establishing a payment plan is no longer possible.

Can I create a new electricity contract?

First, you will have to pay off all the unpaid invoices and the collection costs. Then contact the company’s customer service department. The service can be reopened, if you do not have other outstanding invoices and your credit report is clear.

If your credit report has a payment default entry, obtaining a new electricity service agreement will be a bit more difficult: for example, the power company may require you to pay a security deposit in advance. A payment default entry will remain in your credit report for 2-4 years.
